Defined User Fields had 'Placeholders' so there was some control over spacing and alignment.  These Placeholders do not seem to funtion in the new Custom Fields area, but they are still available as a Data Type when modifying the Custom Fields.  Will Placeholders eventually work properly or are they going away?
